Six Months

Six months from now, I will either have six months of excuses or six months of progress. And the only one who can decide that is me. As someone said, “The reality in life is that you can make progress or you can make excuses, but you can’t make both.”

Results come from sustained work over a long period of time.  Dreaming about work is not work. Thinking about work is not work. Talking about work is not work. Writing about work is not work. Posting on social media about work is not work. Only working every day without fail, is work. Work is what you can measure, so ask yourself, ‘What are my metrics for my work?’ If you can measure it, you can improve it. Only if you can measure it, can you improve it. So, create metrics.

The greatest health hack is to walk 10,000 steps every day. That is five miles a day. If you did that for six months, you would have walked 900 miles. If you dream, think, talk, post or write about it, you will still be in the same place. If you walk five miles a day, you will feel the difference in your blood pressure, blood sugar, stamina, strength in your legs, your weight and muscle tone, a sense of well-being and energy. What’s more, you will see and be able to measure all these things. And you will be a healthier, happier, stronger, more energetic, more disciplined and productive person than you are today. What is that worth to you?

As I say to myself, ‘You want to walk? Walk. Don’t wait to see who wants to walk with you. All you need to walk is the earth. Not even a path. Just earth. So, walk.’ I live in West Springfield, Massachusetts. If I walk 900 miles from here, I could be in Cincinnati, Ohio, Charlotte, North Carolina, Nashville, Tennessee, or Louisville, Kentucky. But only if I walk. Not if I talk about walking.

That is the key. To act. When? As soon as you want results.
